How Overtime Works
Overtime usually starts when a fixed workweek exceeds a threshold: in the US, commonly 40 h/week at 1.5x; other countries/contracts/exemptions differ. Confirm the workweek boundary, whether breaks are paid and how overnight shifts are recorded before calculating pay.
Total weekly hours first.
Hours above threshold x multiplier.
Taxes are separate.
Exempt staff may get no OT.
State/country rules may be stricter.
FAQ
Is anything over 8 h/day overtime?
Not always; US federal rules are weekly 40 h, some states are daily.
Are breaks paid?
Short breaks often are; bona fide meal breaks may not be.
